WOMEN’S CANCERS

In Australia last year Cancer Council raised $4.4 million from 9000 Girls Night In hosts, who inspired 180,000 busy women across Australia to take time out and connect with girlfriends in support of Cancer Council’s mission to defeat cancer.

  • Women’s cancers are those that are specific to women only, including breast and gynaecological cancers (cervical, ovarian, uterine, vaginal, vulva).
  • 1 in 3 Australian women will be diagnosed with cancer by the age of 85. Each year in Australia more than 45,000 women are diagnosed with cancer.
  • Around 17,000 Australian women are diagnosed with breast or gynaecological cancer each year with more than 4,300 women losing their battle against women's cancers each year.
  • On average, 46 Australian women will be told they have a women’s cancer every day.
  • Cervical cancer incidence has fallen by a third in Australia since the introduction of cervical cancer screening.
  • The good news is that advances in treatment and early detection are making a difference. The five-year relative survival rate for women with breast cancer in Australia is now at 88%. Cancer Council hopes this kind of increase in survival rates can be achieved for all women’s cancers.
  • One of the best defences women have against cancer is themselves! By living a cancer smart lifestyle, and participating in recommended screening programs women can significantly reduce their risk of developing cancer and also increase their chances of discovering it early.
