Cancer Council Connect
Cancer Council Connect is a free, confidential service that provides one to one support for people diagnosed with breast or gynaecological cancers in NSW.
Volunteers who have been recruited and specially trained by The Cancer Council NSW provide support. Many women feel that the support and encouragement they receive through the service is an important part of their overall care and recovery.
The service entails matching newly diagnosed women with a volunteer who’s had a similar cancer diagnosis and has undergone similar treatment. Our volunteers understand how newly diagnosed women might be feeling and the challenges they face, so they can offer practical and emotional support at a time when it’s needed most.

Understanding Cancer Program
The Understanding Cancer Program is a free community education program run by The Cancer Council NSW and allied health professionals for people who want to find out more about cancer and how to cope with it.
Patients, carers, family and friends are welcome to attend these frequent one-day programs, which are conducted in English at hospitals and community organisations around NSW.
Arabic, Greek, Italian, Mandarin, Cantonese and Vietnamese are also held in the Sydney metropolitan area.
A trained facilitator leads the program with the support of guest speakers who offer expertise in their specialised areas of interest. Participants learn practical information about many important issues related to a diagnosis of cancer, including:
- What is cancer?
- Treatment options, symptoms and side effects
- Communication with a medical team, friends and family
- Personal reactions, self-esteem and body image
- Nutrition, exercise and cancer
- Complementary therapies
- Care for carers
- What support services are available and how to find them
