Actress and TV personality Lynne McGranger has been touched by cancer both on and off screen. As the irascible Irene Roberts on Channel 7’s Home & Away, her character was diagnosed with breast cancer after finding a lump in her breast during a self-examination.
On the show, Irene set upon a long and difficult journey fighting the deadly disease, undergoing a mastectomy and chemotherapy as part of her treatment. Her character’s spirits were lifted when she found her friends had organised a breast cancer fundraiser.
Speaking about her character, Lynne McGranger said: "She discovers a lump. It's alarming, but she tries to keep it together and goes to the doctor, and then gets the bad news that it's a form of cancer.
"She can't quite take it in. Like any woman facing the thought of removing her breast and battling cancer, she's floored.
"It was an incredibly difficult part to play but it was also an honour to pay homage to so many women I know out there who are fighting this disease, or have beaten it, or, sadly, have lost their lives.
“My father passed away from cancer 10 years ago and currently a very dear friend of mine is fighting her second bout of cancer. She is doing it tough with chemo and radiation.
“Most people will be touched by cancer at some point in their lives, whether it’s being diagnosed themselves or through someone they know, so it’s important to show support for Girls’ Night In and raise money for cancer research and support.”
